with people in the local neighborhood

| ART (INTER) ACTIONS are designed to promote interaction and debate within the local Lower East Side community including the artists who are living and working here. They sometimes use art practices to highlight the value of vital local business and cultural institutions, especially overlooked informal centers of cultural knowledge. Other times they provide an opportunity for development of alliances and connections between art institutions in a variety of communities. 8 Artists: From the AAAC Archive Date: August 14 – September 11, 2010 Artists: Charles Yuen, Dinh Q. Le, Dorothy Imagire, Eunjung Hwang, Howardina Pindell, Nancy Hom, Roger Shimomura, and, Sin-ying Ho. In collaboration with the Artists Alliance Inc.(AAI) and AAAC (Asian American Arts Centre) is pleased to present an exhibition entitled “Eight Artists: from the Archive”, which will be installed in the Cuchifritos art gallery/project space located inside the Essex Street Market from August 14th - September 11th 2010. This exhibition is part of AAI’s Art(Inter)Actions program that is dedicated to fostering the opportunity for development of alliances and connections between art institutions in a variety of communities. This exhibition of Eight Artists from the Archive brings a few chosen artists to the public, focused on those presented in AAAC’s digital archive – artasiamerica.org. The best way to present a context for such art at Cuchifritos is through the presence of the digital archive. Making this resource available on site and demonstrating the ease of tapping into it. AAAC has been gathering its physical archive of images and documents of Asian American artists for over two decades, and a good portion of this resource is now online. Go to artasiamerica.org and/or come to the gallery and ask for a tour of it there. Briefly On View Arielle Falk, BOUND, 2009, digital video, 1:10, variable dimensions In this minute long stop motion video piece, mannequin parts are gradually attached to me with ropes and chains, forming a walking sculpture. Original music accompanies. This piece explores the mind-body relationship, specifically the human condition of being non-detachable from, or bound to, our physical selves. BOUND also examines the burden of body image stereotypes that pervade modern American culture. A show of black and white photographs taken by the 15 to 18 year old participants in ABC No Rio's Spring 2008 darkroom photography class. Over the course of ten classes these students learned how to use SLR cameras and navigate the darkroom. These photographs show a glimpse of their view of the Lower East Side, ABC No Rio, and life as a teenager in New York." A video art exhibition focusing on the human body, Corpus Kinetics brings together Laura Calhoun, Robert O’Connor and Bryan Zanisnik. The three artists portray the exertions of the human body through different narratives. L.E.S. Current 30
